Welcome to Our Slum - Resources for Other Victims

I'm fairly certain that we aren't the only people at the mercy of an unscrupulous slumlord. Unfortunately, much of what I've found on the web is written by the landlord, for the landlord, and seems to make no allowance for those landlords that are PURE EVIL. That said, the following links include some real winners that can help get you out of a bad situation, classified somewhat by their slant.

Pro-Tenant

Nolo Press used to have an interesting site chock full of legal resources for the little guy. For some reason their site hasn't been responding while I type this, but if it's back up it's well worth checking out.

Tenant.net focuses largely on NY and NYC, but it's interesting to see what's going on in an area with strong tenants rights organizations, powerful business interests, and jillions of tenants.

Pro-Landlord

The New Hampshire Property Owner's Association has online copies of the landlord tenant laws for almost all the states. Although their newsletters are slanted towards property owners instead of residents, this is still a great resource.

Neutral

Cornell University has a good, if brief overview of landlord tenant law.

Yahoo indexes a fair number of state and regional guides to tenants rights.

Other/Weird

Consider Section 8 housing. If your income is below the limits established by Housing and Urban Development, you could qualify for subsidized housing. Let the government be your new slumlord!
