In the fall of 1999, twelve guys answered an ad for shared housing. "Luke" had listed a room in a duplex for $275 a month, to be shared with grad students and professionals. Some of the guys were living in their cars. Not one had more than a week left on his current lease.

Instead of meeting Luke, we each met with Carol. Instead of $275, the rent was $300 or more. The mix of residents ran from Freshmen to professionals. Instead of a duplex we were shown an old rooming house that was probably built for mill workers. The house itself was... subpar.

Since no one had any better offers, we all accepted. This is the shit that went down next.
